Bruins 2-1 Canadiens

0 Comments 03 outubro 2011

The Boston Bruins beat out the Montreal Canadiens for the Northeast Division and rallied from a 2-0 deficit in their first-round playoff series on their journey to becoming Stanley Cup champions last season, and so far this preseason the B’s are showing they still have the edge.

Third-period goals by Tyler Seguin and Chris Clark rallied Boston to a 2-1 win on Monday night at the Bell Centre, the second time in as many evenings that the Bruins defeated the Canadiens. They won 7-3 in a neutral-site game in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Sunday.

Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots as Boston remained unbeaten in regulation during the preseason and improved to 3-0-1 overall.

Michael Cammalleri put the Canadiens on the scoreboard first and Carey Price also made 30 saves, but it wasn’t enough to keep Montreal from losing for the fifth time in six games.

Hiller happy to be back in net, moving forward

Teemu Selanne didn’t need to see Jonas Hiller in a game to know that his goaltender was back to form.

When the Anaheim Ducks were about to play their third game in as many nights recently, Selanne and several other players who weren’t in the lineup still put in some work in Anaheim.
Hiller was among the group, too, and Selanne remembers well.

“We’re doing the shootout (drill) and he was almost like a wall,” Selanne said. “I thought he was better than ever. That’s a great sign. We all know how important the goaltending is.”

With three solid preseason games under his belt heading into the team’s trip to Europe as part of the 2011 Compuware NHL Premiere, Hiller has provided glimpses of how important he is to the Ducks and allowed them to breathe a small sigh of relief.

In three preseason games, he allowed three goals, posting a 1.38 goals-against average and .955 save percentage.

Shanahan: Não suspension for Malone

0 Comments 03 outubro 2011

NEW YORK — NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan decided Monday that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Malone would not be suspended for a hit on Montreal Canadiens defenseman Chris Campoli during the third period of a preseason game Friday night in Quebec City. Shanahan, who has been busy this preseason in his new role, said this decision was his “most difficult to date.”

The difficulty was squarely in the fact Malone hit Campoli in the head. But Shanahan’s evaluation is after Campoli lost the puck on the play, the Canadiens defenseman lunged in a way that the head became the check’s principal point of contact.

“We felt that this hit was the most challenging one so far in this preseason for the Department of Player Safety to evaluate,” said Shanahan. “In the end, we felt that Malone had committed to the hit when Campoli was upright. However, when the contact was made, Campoli’s head position significantly changed just prior to the hit.

“There are elements about the hit that we don’t like – specifically, the principal point of contact being the head and that it was not a full-body check. But the overriding factor in our judgment was that Campoli’s loss of the puck and subsequent bending forward for it just prior contributed significantly, if not entirely, to those elements.”

Jets ready to take off for NHL return

0 Comments 03 outubro 2011

One of the most hectic offseasons in recent NHL history came to a close Sept. 17 when the Winnipeg Jets took the ice to begin training camp.

The Jets relocated from Atlanta this summer in a move that returned the NHL to the Manitoba capital after a 15-year absence. The city shut down May 31 when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman arrived in Winnipeg on a rainy morning to announce that Winnipeg once again would host the world’s premier hockey league.

The club sold 13,000 season tickets just four days after Bettman’s announcement, and the pace hasn’t let up since. The relocation kick-started a barrage of on- and off-ice changes to a young roster as the organization tries to right itself after a disappointing 2010-11 season.

Last season’s team owned a 20-15-6 mark on New Year’s Eve but won just 14 of their final 41 games and missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 11th time in 12 seasons.
